About Hogskin

WHY HOGSKIN?

During the Great Depression there were a number of marked hogs running the river bottoms of Calhoun County. People from surrounding counties would come to Calhoun County to kill and skin the hogs. The marked hogskins were left hanging on a fence and the dressed hog was taken back to the family for food. The name “Hogskin County” has remained through the years. The citizens of Calhoun County decided to create a festival in honor of the legendary name. The festival, Hogskin Holidays, is held the second weekend of April each year.

CALHOUN COUNTY

Calhoun County is proud of its rich and treasured heritage.  We are the home of Lacy Fleming, MISS ARKANSAS 2004; Harry Thomason, producer of “DESIGNING WOMEN” and “EVENING SHADE”; Charles B. Pierce, producer of “THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK”; Wood Newton, Songwriter; and Goose Tatum, of the original HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS.  Calhoun County is also home to the LOST 40, a forty acre stand of hardwood and pine trees believed to be a remnant of the South’s first forest, located in southeastern Calhoun County, near Moro Creek.
